Sony Ericsson’s Latest: The Vivaz and Xperia X10

Sony Ericsson are seeking to revive their fortunes with an array of stylish and slender phones. We look at two handsets, the Vivaz and the Xperia X10 and what they promise, both in terms of features and user experience.

First up is Sony Ericsson’s high-def shooting handset, the Vivaz, formerly known as the Kurara.

Available in the ever-so-slightly ridiculously named Sony Ericsson colours of ‘cosmic black’, ‘moon silver’, ‘galaxy blue’ and ‘venus ruby’, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz sports an 8.1 megapixel autofocus camera with face and smile detection, a gorgeous tapered frame and a vivid,3.2-inch touch display.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz also ventures into smartphone territory with features such as assisted GPS with WisePilot navigation, Wi-Fi support a TV-out.

The Vivaz runs on Symbian S60 and as such the user interface is intuitive and easy to get to grips with, so great for anyone looking for a stylish feature phone, without wanting all the hassles of an “always-on” device.

By comparision the Xperia X10 is Sony Ericsson’s top-flight smartphone. Pretty much everything about the X10 is high-end: the capacitive touchscreen is a whopping 4”, and under the hood is a lightning fast Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon 1GHz Processor. Internal memory is in abundance too with 1GB storage and 384MB RAM.

The Xperia X10 is well endowed in the media-department and comes with a stunning 8 million-pixel camera, plus a video camera capable of WVGA images at 30 frames per second. Naturally there’s an mp3 player and a radio with RDS and to listen to these you can plug your own headphone into the 3.5mm jack.

The Xperia runs on the open-source Android OS 1.6, a versatile platform that allowed Sony Ericsson to build up a highly customized user-interface. The interface operates well – and allows simple operation of all the many features contained within the handset.

Whether these two phones can help Sony Ericsson win back customers remains to be seen, but both handsets get the hands up from us!
