Samsung Video Technologies To Go Greener

Samsung Video Technologies To Go GreenerSeem like Samsung has a strong commitment to bring its technology to be greener by releasing its product line with energy-saving feature.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Samsung has made it clear and we can admit that Samsung is doing the right thing toward the whole society. David Steel, Samsung's senior vice president of strategic marketing, said that about 18 percent of customers surveyed by Samsung would pay up to 20 percent more for a device that was marketed as green.

One of Samsung's more interesting technologies is PenTile, which creates an oddly-shaped array of pixels to let more light through, using the light effectively.
The PenTile technology was originally developed by a startup called Clairevoyant, which Samsung bought in 2008. Almost immediately Samsung set up Nouvoyance, which Samsung intends to bring the PenTile technology not only to other divisions within the company, but also to other display manufacturers via licensing agreements.

The PenTile technology is similar to the Red, Green, Blue (RGB) pixel technology used in almost all displays. Normally, turning on all three subpixels creates a white light. But PenTile adds a dedicated "white" or clear subpixel, allowing the backlight to serve as the light, and allowing the three colored subpixels to be turned off to save power. Nouvoyance claims that adding the additionla subpixel can save up to twice the power as if it were eliminated. The PenTiele technology also works for organic LEDs (OLEDs), which draw power only if they subpixels are illuminated. There, the matrix of colors is redesigned to emphasize blue and green.
